Other Covers and Rob Ryan

Here's another Illustrator I found on my illustrated book jacket hunt, I think Rob Ryan is amazing!! he is also on blogger see his blog at http://rob-ryan.blogspot.com/ and visit his website at http://www.misterrob.co.uk/ A lot of his book jacket designs are in shops now, i went to Waterstones to look....

Rob Ryan

Here are a few of his book jacket designs, he has w
orked with many clients and if you do visit his blog you can see just how prolific he is.

I looked at this one because it is female orientated and I felt tied in with my brief because women would be more likely to buy this book. A necklace is a strong feminine symbol, but i also put it on because I think its pretty .....

Book Jacket design, just amazing, I find he has a distinctive style that I feel is instantly recognisable. Click on all the books to take you to the image, to visit his blog see the link above!

Please click on the book jacket to take you to the image; this design is one of my favourites, For this design he worked with Random House, another publisher, for some Louis de Bernieres books. This is posted in his blog in 2008

Here showing Rob Ryan working with Pufffin I really love how he uses silhouettes and positive and negative space in his work. This is for a story the Illustrator believes is set in the dark ages. I loved his use of colour and the focal point of the moon ...

This takes you directly to the image http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Jz-IqtMfia8/SXcSnpRuKMI/AAAAAAAAAng/5yncQn1Mo7Q/s1600-h/faerieheart.jpg

This is a proof he has got back from puffin, I think this is a fairly recent design posted on his blog this year.

I looked at him because his final designs always looked really strong and eye-catching! they would definitely sell the book to me! This is something I aspire to, I really admire Rob Ryan's work. I wondered how long it would take it looks so intricate and delicate!

Here are a few from his website http://www.misterrob.co.uk/

Used for the publishers Bloomsbury. I love the colours in this!

published by penguin, major publisher! This is a cover I have seen on my travels. I really like the use of shape and the silhouetted city ...

Lastly I looked at this one because it is created in black and white, I think this composition looks really clever! and to me appears decorative. It really helped me to look at black and white Illustration for the internal spot.

Click below to visit his shop!!

Interesting Illustration book

You can also buy this book please click on it to take you to Amazon where you can buy it.

This features more of his work and to get a sneak glimpse into some of his processes. He uses paper cut outs but also produces screen prints and so much more!! includes many more Illustrators; especially looking at the new wave of Illustrators....

Birkadoroffs Book covers

To see some really cool examples of book cover illustrations
visit
http://roxannamundi.ca/books/index.htm Roxanna Bikadoroff is an internationally celebrated Illustrator, she has worked for many clients and has been published by the Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker! All work posted with kind permission from Roxanna Bikadoroff

The above image takes you to her site also just an example of the kind of clients she has worked for and an example of a different kind of layout for a front cover.

This is published by Penguin (another prestigious client), this shows the variety of book jackets in the market. I am more interested in Virago at the moment as they are the intended client of the brief given but as you probably know, penguin is an incredibly well know publisher and will be another one of Virago's and Little Brown Book group's competitors.

I looked at this one because it is written by two female authors and could compete against the Virago covers because it is very feminine and women would buy this. I thought this illustration managed to portray a sophisticated femininty which is something i would like to do. I thought this Illustration was beautiful!! It is published by Random House another dominant publisher.

Inspirations from Roxana Bikadoroff- 'Winter'

Love the flowing lines and the mood, really helped me to understand how colour informs mood and helped me understand composition.

Other Covers and Marta Munoz

Current Covers

After doing a bit of book hunting in Waterstones looking at current Illustrated Covers, not only did I find Roxanna Bikadoroff but many others, I have E-mailed a few of them whose covers really stood out, (ones I was personally drawn to and that I find particularly inspiring)

Marta Munoz.

Marta Munoz: a freelance Illustrator, artist and designer has Illustrated a book called
"Backwards in High Heels: The Impossible Art of Being Female" I thought this linked in well to the project I am undertaking as it is all about women, however it is not published by Virago but Fourth Estate Ltd so it is a short look at another competitor.

Absolutley loved this front Cover(shown below) Marta Munoz has been illustrating since 1999 after graduating from Camberwell college of art.

Click the book to visit Amazon where you can buy it and read a summary, Published by Fourth Estate Ltd on 19 Feb 2009, I thought the subject matter of this book would be competition for Virago as it is named "Backwards in High Heels: The Impossible Art of Being Female"

I think Marta Munoz is a really talented pattern maker, this illustration sold the book to me, to visit her website and view more illustrations click http://www.martamunoz.co.uk/ really gorgeous illustrations ranging from Murals to Greeting Cards. I was greatly inspired by her black and white illustrations, which I found useful for the internal spot.

These illustrations taken from her website are a comission to produce drawings for textile printing under the heading 'London Kills Me' in the Clients and Exhibitions section. She has worked for many clients such as 'Time Out London Magazine' and 'Thomas Nelson Publishing' there are many more so don't forget to check out her website and see!

Above some more of her black and white Illustrations, to see more visit http://www.martamunoz.co.uk/ under 'Blanco y Black'
